Summer Semester Courses in International Trade and Multinational Firms  [20.03.26]

In the 2026 summer semester, we offer a coordinated set of Bachelor and Master courses on international trade, multinational firms, and quantitative trade analysis. The courses combine theory and empirics and are well suited for students aiming at careers in internationally active firms, international organisations, or policy institutions.

In the summer semester, we offer the following courses in English:

Bachelor: International Trade
The course “International Trade” targets second‑year Bachelor students with basic knowledge of (micro-)economics, mathematics, and statistics. We use verbal, graphical, and formal tools to introduce modern trade theory and empirics.By the end of the course, students will be able to work with standard trade data sources, understand core theoretical and empirical models, and apply them to current globalization debates. The course is taught in English and provides an excellent basis for advanced trade courses and seminars at the Master’s level.

Master: Multinational Firms
The course “Multinational Firms” builds on recent research on firms operating across borders and participating in global value chains. In the first part, we take a micro perspective on firms’ decisions to become multinational, choose locations, and organise production. In the second part, we use a macro perspective to assess the quantitative importance of global value chains. The course equips students with analytical skills that are relevant for careers in international business, consulting, and policy institutions.

Master: Master Seminar (International Trade and Inequality)
The Master seminar revisits the gravity framework and quantitative trade models from the course “International Trade and Inequality”. Students derive and estimate a theory‑consistent gravity equation and work with a state‑of‑the‑art quantitative trade model, including calibration and numerical implementation. The seminar is particularly suitable for students planning an empirical or quantitative Master’s thesis.
