Winter Semester Courses in International Economics  [02.10.26]

In the 2026/27 winter semester, we offer courses at every stage of study, from the first-semester introduction to economics to a Master seminar on global value chains.

Bachelor: Einführung in die Wirtschaftswissenschaften (in German)
This compulsory first-semester course introduces core concepts of economics: preferences and consumer choice, how income and price changes shape decisions, and the international division of labour, comparative advantage, and trade.

Bachelor Seminar: Topics in International Economics – Empirical Trade Data Analysis
The seminar is built around Antràs, Kulesza and Presbitero (2026), "The Remains of the Trade", a recent study of US–China decoupling. Using product-level trade data from CEPII BACI, students compute and interpret indices that measure how exposed countries are to the US–China trade conflict, and they link their results to the theoretical model of the paper. All empirical work is done in R. The seminar paper comes with a replication package, so students practise the full workflow of an empirical project, from data and code to a written and oral presentation of their results.

Master IBE: Mathematical Methods for Business and Economics
This compulsory first-semester course connects fundamental mathematical tools with core microeconomic concepts. It provides the analytical foundation for later courses such as "Multinational Firms".

Master Seminar: Global Value Chain Analysis
The seminar builds on a topic from the course "Multinational Firms". Students analyse the structure and quantitative importance of global value chains. It is well suited for students planning an empirical or quantitative Master's thesis.

Further information on the courses and on ILIAS is available in the teaching section of our website.
